How do you sterilize casing soil?

Place the container of casing soil into your microwave and microwave on high for 90 seconds for every 2.2 pounds of casing soil that you need to sterilize. The microwave’s heat pasteurizes the casing soil and kills any organisms present.

Should I sterilize casing layer?

Step 2: Pasteurize There is not much nutrition in a 50-50 mix of peat moss and vermiculite, so full sterilization is not necessary. That being said, any casing layer is prone to some form of contamination, so it is generally a good idea to pasteurize it before applying to the top of the block.

What is casing soil?

Casing soil is made up of peat. Peat consist of many small and larger pores which act as communicating structures that affect the flow of water. The very tiny (micro) pores absorb water very slowly, but retain it for a long time. The larger (macro) pores can absorb water faster but release it again very quickly.

How do you prepare casing for soil?

The soil used for casing process should be free of stones and stubble and has to be sterilized before casing. The soil is taken in a mud pot or a vessel and steamed in an autoclave or pressure for 45 minutes. (Soil can also be mixed with a little quantity of water and sterilized for this purpose).

How do you pasteurize casing soil?

For pasteurization of casing mixture, casing soil is filled in trays and trays in turn are stacked in the pasteurization room. Steam is introduced to bring the temperature of casing mixture to 65-70°C and which is maintained for 6-8 hours.

What is casing the compost?

CASING: The casing operation is the fourth step in mushroom farming and is a top- dressing placed directly on spawn- run compost from 14 to 21 days after the spawning operation. CASING LAYER: The top-dressing is required to induce the fruiting of the mushroom mycelium.

How do you sterilize soil for mushroom cultivation?

One way to pasteurize the substrate is simply to submerge it in boiling water for at least one or two hours. For most operations, we have found that pasteurization is sufficient to grow mushrooms with minimal risk of contamination.

Are casing layers necessary?

The Benefits of a Casing Layer Not all mushroom species require a casing layer. But in the words of Stamets and Chilton, In all species where the use of a casing has been indicated as optional, yields are clearly enhanced with the application of one.

How do you induce pinning in mycelium?

Humidity. The humidity with a fruiting chamber must remain high in order to encourage pinning and to all the growing mycelium to retain as much water as it can hold. The relative humidity(RH) of the air around fruiting mycelium should be at least 90%.

How do you Sterilise a substrate?

What is casing inoculum?

CASING INOCULUM (CI): Low nutrient materials like vermiculite, peat or spent mushroom substrate that is sterilized and then it is fully colonized with mushroom mycelium. This material is then added to the casing layer to speed up the colonization of the casing layer and shorten the time to harvesting.

How long is sterilized substrate good for?
