What is a gallenkamp?

A mains operated thermoelectric apparatus that determines the melting point of a substance up to 300°C. Comprises of an aluminium block which accepts up to three samples in 100 x 2 mm bore capillary tubes.

What is MP and BP in chemistry?

Melting Point and Boiling Point.

Why is paraffin oil used in MP?

It has a very high boiling point and so it can be used to maintain high temperatures in the boiling and melting point apparatus without loss of the substance. It is liquid at room temperature and can maintain even temperature in boiling point/melting point apparatus convection.

Why melting and freezing point is same?

Upon cooling, the particles in a liquid lose energy, stop moving about and settle into a stable arrangement, forming a solid. Freezing occurs at the same temperature as melting, hence, the melting point and freezing point of a substance are the same temperature.

Can you reuse a sample for melting point?

If a MP must be redetermined always use a fresh sample – once a sample has melted, you must assume that it may have decomposed, and therefore become contaminated with impurities, causing the MP to become depressed and the range widened. Never dispose of used capillaries or any glass in the regular trash.

What is a melting point tube?

The Thiele tube, named after the German chemist Johannes Thiele, is a laboratory glassware designed to contain and heat an oil bath. Such a setup is commonly used in the determination of the melting point of a substance. The apparatus itself resembles a glass test tube with an attached handle.

Which liquid can be used in Thiele’s tube?

The Thiele tube, named after the German chemist Johannes Thiele, is a laboratory glassware designed to contain and heat an oil bath.

What is the main difference between melting point and boiling point?

The main difference between boiling point and melting point is that the melting point is defined as the temperature at which solid and liquid phases are in equilibrium, whereas the boiling point is the temperature at which the vapour pressure of a liquid is equal to the external pressure.

What is MP in chemistry?

Melting point (mp): The temperature (or more commonly temperature range) at which a substance undergoes a solid to liquid phase change (i.e., it melts) without an increase in temperature. Alternately, the temperature at which a substance exists in equilibrium between its solid and liquid phases.

What is lowest melting point?

The chemical element with the lowest melting point is Helium and the element with the highest melting point is Carbon.

Can I drink liquid paraffin?

You can take LIQUID PARAFFIN 100ML with or without food. Take the prescribed dose/quantity by mouth using the pack’s measuring cup and shake the bottle well before each use. You are advised to take LIQUID PARAFFIN 100ML for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you, depending on your medical condition.

Does water freeze at 0?

Ordinarily, the freezing point of water and melting point is 0 °C or 32 °F. The temperature may be lower if supercooling occurs or if there are impurities present in the water which could cause freezing point depression to occur. Under certain conditions, water may remain a liquid as cold as -40 to -42°F!

What is it called when a solid turns directly into a gas?

sublimation, in physics, conversion of a substance from the solid to the gaseous state without its becoming liquid. An example is the vaporization of frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice) at ordinary atmospheric pressure and temperature.
