What gauge needle is used for stereotactic breast biopsy?

Stereotactic core-needle biopsy using a 14-gauge needle is widely accepted to be sensitive (90.5%) and specific (98.3%) in diagnosing breast masses, compared with 62.4% and 86.9%, respectively, for FNA. Core-needle biopsy can also be used to detect in situ as well as invasive malignancy.

Is a breast biopsy done with a needle?

A core needle biopsy (CNB) uses a larger hollow needle to sample breast changes felt by the doctor or seen on an ultrasound, mammogram, or MRI. This is often the preferred type of biopsy if breast cancer is suspected.

What is stereotactic needle?

A stereotactic needle biopsy, also called stereotactic core needle biopsy, is a medical test to remove a piece of tissue from your body. The tissue is then tested to find out what it is. Imaging, such as an x-ray or CT, is used during the biopsy to better see where the mass or lesion is that needs to be biopsied.

Stereotactic large-core needle breast biopsy is a safe and reliable procedure, which is not experienced as painful in 60% of our patients. It is important that any discomfort experienced by the patient during a biopsy procedure is minimised.

What size needle is used for a biopsy?

Most pathologists use biopsy needles that are 14 gauge or larger, which are considered adequate for establishing diagnosis. However, these needles can completely excise malignant lesions that are smaller than 0.5 cm.

How painful is Stereotactic breast biopsy?

Generally, the procedure is not painful and the results are as accurate as when a tissue sample is removed surgically. No breast defect remains and, unlike surgery, stereotactic needle biopsy does not distort the breast tissue or make it difficult to read future mammograms.
