Can you use a tow ball as a recovery point?
Never Use the Tow Ball for Recovery! Because the tow ball is installed on a tongue, the bolt is a single sheer bolt installation and is likely to break when used in a recovery situation and turn the tow ball into a flying missile projectile.
Are tow balls safe?
One question we hear a lot is ‘are detachable towbars safe?’ and the answer is yes – as long as you use it correctly. A fixed towbar is no safer than a detached towbar. It is all a matter of convenience and what you want to use the towbar for.

So when should I do it? Ultimately the decision to replace your towbar comes down to how often you use it. If you’re the type of person who hitches a caravan to the back of the car every weekend to get out in the great outdoors, then you might need to replace your towbar every five years.
Should you lubricate a tow ball?

Put simply, DO NOT GREASE THE BALL. There, I’ve said it. The reason is is that it is a very open component (as opposed to the closed-off hitch shafts and hitch receiver like the XO Hitch), dirt and dust will get stuck to the ball, and in the coupling.
