What does DID feel like?

Someone diagnosed with DID may feel uncertain about their identity and who they are. They may feel the presence of other identities, each with their own names, voices, personal histories and mannerisms. The main symptoms of DID are: memory gaps about everyday events and personal information.

Can you have mild DID?

This is a normal process that everyone has experienced. Examples of mild, common dissociation include daydreaming, highway hypnosis or “getting lost” in a book or movie, all of which involve “losing touch” with awareness of one’s immediate surroundings.

Symptoms and signs of dissociative disorders depend on the type and severity, but may include: Feeling disconnected from yourself. Problems with handling intense emotions. Sudden and unexpected shifts in mood – for example, feeling very sad for no reason.

The disorder affects between 0.01 and 1% of the population. It can occur at any age. Women are more likely than men to have DID.

You may notice sudden changes in mood and behavior. People with dissociative identity disorder may forget or deny saying or doing things that family members witnessed. Family members can usually tell when a person “switches.” The transitions can be sudden and startling.
