What is azithromycin injection used for?

Azithromycin injection is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. It is also used to prevent Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Azithromycin belongs to the class of drugs known as macrolide antibiotics.

Is azithromycin available in injectable form?

ZITHROMAX for injection consists of azithromycin dihydrate and the following inactive ingredients: citric acid and sodium hydroxide. ZITHROMAX for injection is supplied in lyophilized form in a 10 mL vial equivalent to 500 mg of azithromycin for intravenous administration.

How is azithromycin injection given?

It is recommended that the 500 mg dose of azithromycin as powder for solution for infusion, diluted as described above, be administered as an intravenous infusion over at least 60 minutes. Azithromycin should not be administered as an intravenous bolus or an intramuscular injection.

How do you dilute azithromycin injections?

Prepare the initial solution of ZITHROMAX (azithromycin for injection) by adding 4.8 mL of Sterile Water For Injection to the 500 mg vial and shaking the vial until all of the drug is dissolved.

Does azithromycin have side effects?

Side effects of azithromycin

  • Feeling sick (nausea) Stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food while you’re taking this medicine.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Losing your appetite.
  • Headaches.
  • Feeling dizzy or tired.
  • Changes to your sense of taste.

Can you dilute azithromycin in water?

Erythromycin can freely be dissolved in organic solvents like DMSO etc., however, I think it can be also dissolved in water if you reduce the concentration of your stock.

Is azithromycin harmful?

Azithromycin may cause a condition that affects the heart rhythm (QT prolongation). QT prolongation can rarely cause serious (rarely fatal) fast/irregular heartbeat and other symptoms (such as severe dizziness, fainting) that need medical attention right away.
