Do felt hats get ruined in the rain?

A light rain shower, drizzle, even a little snow will not destroy most felt hats. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are not good for felt hats. Straw hats (made of natural fibers) should NEVER be worn in the rain. A straw hat will not maintain it’s shape in wet weather.

Can you shape a felt hat without steam?

The method for shaping depends on the material your cowboy hat is made from. While some straw hats have a wire in the brim which can easily be bent and shaped, other types of hats require more work. Felt hats will need to be steamed in order to become malleable, while palm leaf cowboy hats can be soaked and shaped.

How do you reshape a wide brim hat?

Place heavy objects, whether they are books, weights, or even stones themselves (sticks won’t actually work here) on the creases of your brim and lay the hat on a flat surface for 24 hours. You’ll notice your hat bounce right back into shape, and you’ll be back in style.

Do felt hats shrink over time?

Hats can shrink with time from sweat and humidity. Leather hats, straw hats, and felt hats can stretch a bit after use, but you should still go bigger if in between sizes.

Can you wear a felt hat in the summer?

Because of its versatility, the wool felt hat can be worn during any season and all types of temperatures. With that being said, it’s important to recognize the thickness, the weight, and the material of the felt, especially for those higher temperatures during the summer.

What happens if a felt hat gets wet?

Most if not all fur felt hats are shower-proof, and can confidently be worn in light to moderate rain without fear of the material or shape being damaged. Constant wear in HEAVY rain will cause any hat to distort and potentially shrink over time.

Why do cowboys tip their hats?

As mentioned earlier, in the code of the Old West, men would only tip their hats to women, not other men. That said, tipping your hat can be a sign of respect. So, it makes sense to do it as a way of acknowledging someone important. A hat tip is a silent way of showing respect between cowboys.
