What Are Biobased Chemicals: According to the USDA, biobased products are “derived from plants and other renewable agricultural, marine and forestry materials.

What are biobased polymers?

Bio-based polymers are defined as materials for which at least a portion of the polymer consists of material produced from renewable raw materials. For example, bio-based polymers may be produced from corn or sugarcane. The remaining portion of the polymers may be from fossil fuel-based carbon.

Why are biobased products important?

Bio-based products help reduce the dependence on fossil fuels, a finite resource. Bio-based products can also help tackle social issues, creating employment and rural development.

What is bio naphtha used for?

Bionaphtha, just like legacy naphtha, is primarily used as a gasoline blending component or a feedstock for petrochemical crackers that make ethylene, propylene and butadiene, key for consumer plastics production. Alternatively, if there is a demand shortage, it can be used to fuel refinery operations.

How Bio naphtha is produced?

The bionaphtha, is obtained from vegetable oils, exhausted food oils or other types of organic waste. The chemical recycling of mixed plastic waste leads to “recycled oil” as raw material, a pyrolysis oil.

It’s made from 100% renewable resources such as sugar cane, corn, rice, potatoes, wheat and vegetable oil. These resources, especially sugar cane, have been proved to be the most environmentally friendly materials and the best method of recreating the polymers that regular polythene products have.

Biobased products, designated by the Secretary of Agriculture, are commercial or industrial prod- ucts that are composed in whole, or in significant part, of biological products or renewable domestic agricultural materials or forestry materials.

How can biobased products drive innovation in the chemical industry?

To drive innovation in this space, the programs must be extended to renewable chemical intermediates, as required by authorizing statute, and the programs must be implemented without further delay. Biobased products can offer significant growth to the U.S. economy and offer America a competitive advantage in the chemicals and plastics industry.

Are Biobio-based chemicals environmentally sustainable?

Bio-based chemicals are perceived to be environmentally sustainable, because they are produced from renewable resources. Unfortunately, the picture is much more complex.

Is bio-based production cheaper than petro-chemicals?

However, currently the cost of bio-based production in many cases exceeds the cost of petrochemical production. For chemicals with novel functionality, e.g. lactic acid, succinic acid, furandicarboxylic acid, must be proven to perform at least as well as the petrochemical equivalent they are substituting and to have a lower environmental impact.
