What is PZP?

Home » About PZP » What is PZP? The zona pellucida (ZP) is a glycoprotein membrane that surrounds all mammalian eggs. Certain proteins in the membrane serve as the sperm receptor. The contraceptive vaccine produced by the SCC uses the ZP from the pig, thus the name porcine zona pellucida (PZP).

What is PZP made of?

PZP is a vaccine derived from slaughterhouse pig ovaries (yes, we’d prefer this wasn’t the case). When injected into a female mammal this foreign protein induces an immune response that results in the generation of antibodies to combat the protein.

Is PZP a pesticide?

The PZP vaccine is not a pesticide. It is an extremely well-vetted immunocontraceptive vaccine that has been used for 40 years in many wildlife species including wild horses.

What is PZP vaccine?

PORCINE ZONA PELLUCIDA (PZP) VACCINE Product information – Derived from porcine zona pellucida, the PZP vaccine causes antibodies that prevent the attachment of sperm to ova and, thus, blocks fertilization.

How long does horse PZP last?

one year
For horses, PZP can be more than 90 percent effective, costs just $24 per dose, and lasts for one year. For the PZP to be effective, the target animal needs to receive a primer dose, a booster dose four to six weeks later, and an annual booster after that.

Who makes PZP vaccine?

PZP (porcine zona pellucida) is a protein that occurs naturally in pig ovaries. The HSUS and others are conducting research to develop synthetic, longer-acting formulations of PZP. Zonastat-H is produced at the Science and Conservation Center in Billings, Montana.

How much does PZP cost?

What is the cost of the PZP? Each 0.5ml dose is $25. Each animal will need 2 initial doses then a dose every 8 to 12 months, depending on the species. Lyophilized doses are available for international shipments at $30 a dose.

How does PZP prevent pregnancy?

When pig ZP (PZP) is injected into a female animal, her body produces antibodies to it. These antibodies attach to the sperm-receptor sites on the ZP preventing sperm from attaching and blocking fertilization.

What is the normal range of PZP levels?

The amount of PZP in the plasma of healthy people in normal conditions has been identified as <0.03 mg/mL while for pregnant women this can rise to be at concentrations of 0.5 – 3.0 mg/mL. A 1976 study observing the roles of contraceptives on PZP amounts, resulted in speculation that estrogen plays some role in controlling PZP expression.

What is the difference between pH and pKa?

• pH is the reciprocal of the logarithm of H + concentration. pKa is the logarithm of K a value. • pH gives an idea about the amount of H + ions present in the medium. pKa value gives an idea about to which side the equilibrium is favored (the degree of acid dissociation).

What is the PZP in bronchiectasis?

“Sputum Pregnancy Zone Protein (PZP) – a potential biomarker of bronchiectasis severity”. European Respiratory Journal. 50: OA1969. Doi: 10.1183/1393003.congress-2017.OA1969 ^ Viennois E, Baker MT, Xiao B, Wang L, Laroui H, Merlin D (2015). “Longitudinal study of circulating protein biomarkers in inflammatory bowel disease”.
