Triage is the assessment area for maternity where we assess many needs, not just labour. When should I call my pregnancy assessment?

When should I contact EPU?
The Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU) is open to any women who is less than 14 weeks pregnant who is experiencing symptoms they find concerning (e.g. vaginal bleeding or lower abdominal pain).
Can I refer myself to EPU?
At my local EPU, you can only be referred by GP / midwife, there is no self-referral even if they have seen you in a previous pregnancy / miscarriage. Current advice (during covid-19) is that you’ll only be offered a scan if you have heavy bleeding and cramps or if you have a history of ectopic pregnancy.
What does a senior midwife do?
This means that I work on the delivery suite in a large hospital and am responsible for caring for women and their babies during pregnancy, labour and immediately after birth.
