What is a lavage procedure?
Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a procedure that is sometimes done during a bronchoscopy. It is also called bronchoalveolar washing. BAL is used to collect a sample from the lungs for testing. During the procedure, a saline solution is put through the bronchoscope to wash the airways and capture a fluid sample.
How do you give gastric lavage?

- Intubate patient.
- Place patient in left lateral decubitus position with head 20 degrees downward.
- Externally measure length of lavage tube needed to reach stomach.
- Lubricate appropriately sized lavage tube and gently pass through esophagus to stomach.
- Confirm placement of tube.
How is whole lung lavage performed?
There are no guidelines standardizing the procedure. Our preferred method is to lavage one lung at a time, with the patient supine, filling to functional residual capacity (FRC) and repeating cycles of drainage and instillation with chest percussion until the effluent is clear.
