What is the purpose of an accelerator pump on a carburetor?

To address this most carburetors employ what’s called an accelerator pump, which is essentially a gasoline squirt gun that shoots fuel into the throat of the carburetor to enrich the air-fuel mixture in the brief moment before engine vacuum returns.

What causes an engine to bog at full throttle?

Check the Air Filter: The most common reason why an engine bogs out under acceleration is because the air/fuel mixture is ‘dirty’ or inefficient. If the air filter is clogged or has a lot of dirt in it, it could be bogging down the engine. Clean the air filter and see if the problem goes away.

How do you fix a running rich carburetor?

Regardless of whether or not the engine is running too rich or too lean, bring it down to a very lean mixture by turning both screws a quarter-turn at a time, counter-clockwise, then slowly bringing them back up to an equal and smooth mixture.

What is bogging the engine?

By Rob Erlick. Engine RPM bog down occurs as the engine is loaded beyond its torque-producing capabilities. This occurs when engine RPMs are allowed to decay below the design specification. Bog down can occur during ground start, taxi, and the landing roll.

How sensitive is the idle of a Holley?

Holleys are EXTREMELY sensitive to dirt. I’ve seen idle go to hell in a hamdbasket because of a tiny piece of lint in the lower idle fuel restrictions. Even some dried gas residue can decrease the diameter enough to cause a poor idle.
