Is Cannery Row a good book?

I’m so glad I did. Cannery Row is a beautiful book guaranteed to encourage introspection and reflection on life. Set in the real Monterey Ocean View Avenue, fictionalized as Cannery Row, it is a study of identity. We learn about the individual characters and all their idiosyncrasies.

What is the plot of Cannery Row?

Cannery Row has a simple premise: Mack and his friends are to do something nice for their friend Doc, who has been good to them without asking for reward. Mack hits on the idea that they should throw a thank-you party, and the entire community quickly becomes involved.

Why is Cannery Row important?

Cannery Row (1945), one of Steinbeck’s best and most widely read fictional works, immortalized Cannery Row as a one-of-a-kind neighborhood of fish packing plants, bordellos and flophouses, and made it the most famous street in America. Sweet Thursday, the sequel to Cannery Row, was published in 1954.

Is Cannery Row a good book Reddit?

Cannery Row was fantastic, Steinbeck’s writing is one of the most pleasurable things I’ve ever read. Cannery Row itself kind of reminded me of The Big Lebowski, it’s a story about nothing and a story about everything. Plus, I really like to party, so it resonated deep in me.

What does the title Of Mice and Men mean?

Steinbeck chose the title Of Mice and Men after reading a poem called “To a Mouse” by Robert Burns, in which the poet regrets accidentally destroying a mouse’s nest. The poem resonates with several of Of Mice and Men’s central themes: the impermanence of home and the harshness of life for the most vulnerable.

Should you read Tortilla Flat or Cannery Row first?

They also connect thematically as reactions to the US depression of the 1930s: Tortilla Flat was written in its midst in 1935, Cannery Row 10 years later, in 1945. It makes sense to start with the earlier book, so let’s whizz through Tortilla Flat and reconvene here soon.

Should you read Cannery Row before Sweet Thursday?

Yes, read Cannery Row first. In fact, I’d read Tortilla Flat too if you haven’t, as that book takes place in the same setting and may have some characters or places in common.
