Why are there 4 types of blood?

There are four main blood types: A, B, AB and O. The system for classifying them came about in order to allow safe blood transfusions. Like all cells, red blood cells have molecules on their surface called ‘antigens’. People have different antigens, depending on their genes.

How common are the 4 blood types?

Blood types

  • O positive: 35%
  • O negative: 13%
  • A positive: 30%

  • B positive: 8%
  • B negative: 2%

Who found the 4 blood types?

Landsteiner
Landsteiner won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930 for detailing immunological reactions in the ABO blood group system. The ABO blood group system divides human blood into one of four types based on the antibodies that are present on each cell.

Who is Decastello and Sturli?

In 1902, two of Dr. Landsteiner’s colleagues, Alfred von Decastello and Adriano Sturli, discovered the fourth blood group, AB, further elucidating the differences in compatibility among blood types. In 1907 Reuben Ottenberg of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York performed the first successful transfusions.

Why is O positive so common?

In order to be group O, you need both parent cells to be O. But group O is still more common simply because it is the ancestral form. The A and B mutations appeared in the last 20,000 years and haven’t spread through the population yet.

Who invented AB blood?

Karl Landsteiner
After discovery of the first human blood groups (ABO) by Karl Landsteiner in 1901 (5), gradually from 1927, other blood groups were also discovered and reported which its collection is given in Table 2….Table 1:

In general, does a child usually have the same blood type as one of their parent’s blood type? While a child could have the same blood type as one of his/her parents, it doesn’t always happen that way. For example, parents with AB and O blood types can either have children with blood type A or blood type B.

What are the six different blood types?

Type B: This blood type has a marker known as B. Type AB: This blood type has both A and B markers. Type O: This blood type has neither A or B markers. Blood is further classified as being either “Rh positive” (meaning it has Rh factor) or “Rh negative” (without Rh factor). So, there are eight possible blood types: O negative.

What are the four classification of blood type?

red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body

    – So it can donate blood to everyone. – So it will be helpful in emergency donations for your family/friends. – The universal red cell donor has Type O negative blood type.
